Writing as Sewing the Self

One entry point to thinking about Shelley Jackson’s work is to consider her sources of inspiration and philosophical allegiances. The work of French thinkers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari in A Thousand Plateaus is helpful for understanding Jackson’s strategies in hypertext and how she sees is cultural value with respect to topics of identity and selfhood, creativity, and interpersonal experience. Here’s the introductory chapter of the ATP, “Rhizome,” ¬†which can be read profitably alongside PwG. It is a tough read for various reasons, but there’s a lot of aphoristic material that works on its own, a part from the cultural and philosophical contexts the D&G are responding to and working within.
