How to Read Patchwork Girl on Windows 7+ (Really!)

Hello friends! Hope you’re having a relaxing spring break so far. I come bearing good news: you CAN, in fact, get Patchwork Girl running on Windows 7 and up! How, you ask? Let me walk you through the process.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • A COMPUTER WITH WINDOWS ON IT (YOU PROBABLY ALREADY HAVE THIS)
  • DOSBOX
  • WINDOWS 3.1
  • PATCHWORK GIRL – You’ll need an ISO file of the CD to get this to work. You can either rip it yourself or email either me or Terry to get a link to a premade ISO file. Remember that this guide is made assuming you bought and own the CD yourself!

WHAT TO DO

  1. Download and install DOSBox.
  2. Make a folder somewhere on your computer and go ahead and stick both the Windows 3.1 and Patchwork Girl ISO files in there. My folder is at “C:\Games\DOS\”. Yours can be anything, but make sure to keep it short. You’ll be typing it a lot.
  3. Fire up DOSBox and type this (replace “c:\games\dos\” with your folder directory):

    mount c c:\games\dos

    imgmount d c:\games\dos\windows_3.1.iso -t iso

    d:\

    setup

  4. Windows setup will launch, it’s pretty straightforward. You can use the tutorial when it finishes if you don’t know how to use 3.1, or just skip it if you’re feeling confident.
  5. Assuming it makes you restart DOSBox, fire it up again and type

    mount c c:\games\dos

    imgmount d c:\games\dos\patchwork_girl.iso -t iso

    c:

    cd windows

    win

and Windows will boot up. Now for the fun part.

  6. Inside 3.1, you’re going to want to open the File Manager program in the “Main” window. It should open to the D: directory.¬† If it doesn’t, click on the “d” button in top gray bar. It should have a rectangle that looks like it’s spitting out a CD at you.
  7. Double-click the “ar16e301.exe” file. This will install Acrobat Reader onto 3.1, allowing you to read the Patchwork Girl manual¬† once you have the hypertext installed. (Side note: the installer might not go away after it finishes installing the program. If this happens, just quit DOSBox and follow the instructions from step 5. Acrobat should still be installed. If not, just rerun the EXE.)
  8. Reopen File Manager and run “install.exe”. This will install Patchwork Girl onto your virtual machine (wow!).
  9. Minimize File Manager to get back to Program Manager, open the Hypertexts folder, double-click on the Patchwork Girl icon, and voila! All of your dreams have come true. Feel free to read the manual, also conveniently located in the Hypertexts folder, if you need any pointers on how to handle Patchwork Girl. Enjoy!

And there you have it! If you ever need to reopen Windows 3.1 after closing DOSBox, just open DOSBox and input the commands

mount c c:\games\dos

c:

cd windows

win

Hope you kept your directory path short! If you have any questions, leave a comment here on the blog and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Have a good break, and happy reading!
